Windows XP

Running off-line mirror(packages) at home

I had a dual operating system (Windows & Linux) desktop computer at home. I kept Linux in a first boot sequence. After few months while I was booting the Linux, the desktop environment (login session) didn't appear. Either my debian installer CD have corrupted or not installed it completely. Had there been an internet connection at home, I could have fixed it easily but it took me few days. Finally, I got the solution:

I took the debian mirror from the office(where we have Linux machine online) in my external hard disk. At home(off-line), I have updated the sources.list from the drive as follow:

1. Type in root and give root password in the login command.

2. Go to sources list(#vim /etc/apt/sources.list) and comment the hard disk.

4. Save and Exit. Update(#aptitude update) the system once and install the package.

5. After installing the package, reboot(#reboot) your system.

                                                     THE PROBLEM GOT SOLVED!

Fixing Master Boot Record(MBR) in XP

Again the problem occurred in Linux. It was not like before. I couldn't solve the problem since an error was big. I had no option rather than deleting the Linux partition, So that I can use it again.
From the Disk Management in Windows, I have deleted the Linux partition and formatted to windows' partition. BUT when I restarted Windows, an error occurred(booting problem) as follow:

    "Error loading operating system

    "Missing operating system

    "Invalid partition table

The grub error occured. Both of my systems didn't work - here are the steps I have followed:

1. First, restart your computer with the Windows XP setup disk in the CD drive. If you don’t have your original disk, borrow one or download a ISO image from a torrent site.

2. When prompted, boot from the CD drive by pressing any key. If Windows loads automatically, you will first have to enter the BIOS setup and change the order of the boot devices to start with the CD drive.

3. Once the setup loads, you will see the option to press R to repair a Windows installation.
4. Once the Recovery Console loads up, you will have to type in a number that corresponds to your Windows installation. This is normally just 1. Press Enter and then type in the Administrator password.

5. Now at the prompt, type in fixmbr. Your damaged MBR will now be replaced with a new master boot record and your computer should now be able to boot properly. Note that you may also want to run the fixboot command to repair the boot sector with a new one.
Also, make sure you only use these commands on a system with one operating system installed. If you have more than one operating system installed, fixmbr and fixboot could mess up everything.

Removing WGA Tray in XP

When I updated my copy of Windows with Windows Update then my system started showing this notification that reads “You may be a victim of software counterfeiting” and “This copy of windows does not pass genuine Windows validation”.

These notifications started appearing again and again.

1.    Before doing anything serious try restoring your system. If the problem is occurring after the Windows Update then System Restore will surely help.
2.    But if it does not then do try this, launch Windows Task Manager.
3.    Locate the process “wgatray.exe” and end it.
4.    Log in into the Safe Mode and delete the file WgaTray.exe from c:\Windows\System32
5.    Also delete the WgaTray.exe from c:\Windows\System32\dllcache
6.    Type regedit in Run to open Registry Editor, navigate to  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
      \SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify key.
7.    Delete the folder WgaLogon and all of its contents.
8.    Restart the PC normally.

We can also download  RemoveWGA.exe, tool and just run it. If found obsolete, try newer version.

CHECK SCANNER UPDATES FOR ALL OPERATING SYSTEMS.
